xTool P3 Review: Is This 80W CO2 Laser Cutter Worth It?

Everything you need to know before spending $5,000+ on xTool's flagship laser. An honest breakdown from an authorized dealer who has sold dozens of these machines.

The xTool P3 is xTool's flagship CO2 laser cutter and engraver. It won a CES 2026 Innovation Award, it has an 80W CO2 laser tube, a massive 36" x 18" work area, and a price tag that starts around $4,999. It is, by almost every measure, the most advanced desktop CO2 laser you can buy right now.

But is it worth the money? And more importantly, is it right for you?

We sell the xTool P3 at Crafting Source, and we have helped dozens of customers choose between it and other options. Some of them needed the P3. Some of them did not. This review is an honest breakdown of what the P3 does well, where it falls short, and who should (and should not) buy it.

What the xTool P3 Does Exceptionally Well

The "Place and Go" Workflow Is Real

This is the P3's defining feature, and it is not marketing hype. xTool calls it the ACS (Automated Creation System), and it genuinely changes how you interact with a laser cutter.

Here is what happens when you use the P3: You place your material on the bed. The 16MP SkyView camera takes a photo of the entire work area. You position your design on the camera image in the software. You close the lid and press start. The LiDAR autofocus measures the material height and adjusts the laser focus automatically. The AutoLift Base adjusts the bed height if needed. The laser runs the job.

There is no manual focusing. No measuring material thickness with calipers. No adjusting the Z-axis with a hand crank. No squinting through a viewfinder to check alignment. The P3 handles all of it automatically, with alignment accuracy down to 0.0079 inches.

If you have used other CO2 lasers (like an OMTech, Thunder Laser, or even the xTool P2S), you know how much time the setup process takes. Measure the material. Adjust the bed. Run a framing test. Adjust again. The P3 eliminates most of that friction. For someone running a production business where you are switching materials and designs throughout the day, this time savings adds up fast.

80W Power Makes Thick Cutting Practical

The jump from 55W (on the older P2S) to 80W is significant. The P3 cuts 20mm basswood and 25mm acrylic in a single pass. That is 3/4" wood and nearly 1" acrylic without having to flip the material or run multiple passes.

For practical purposes, this means you can cut 3/4" plywood for furniture-grade projects, thick acrylic for signage and display pieces, and hardwoods that would require a CNC on any lower-powered laser. The cutting speed at 1,200 mm/s is also roughly double the P2S, which directly translates to more output per hour.

One important nuance: the 80W power primarily benefits cutting, not engraving. For engraving, you actually want lower power at controlled speeds to avoid scorching. Multiple reviewers have noted that the engraving speed does not dramatically benefit from the extra wattage. Engraving a detailed image still takes roughly the same time as it would on a 55W machine, because you are running at reduced power anyway. Where the 80W shines is in how quickly and cleanly it cuts through thick material.

The Work Area Is Enormous

At 36" x 18", the P3 has the largest working area of any desktop CO2 laser in its class. That is 2.3 times the area of the P2S. You can fit full 24" x 18" sheets of material, create large signs, process multiple small items in a single batch, or work on projects that simply would not fit in smaller machines.

With the optional Intelligent Conveyor Feeder, you can process materials of unlimited length. This is genuinely useful for banner-style signage, continuous patterns, or long production runs.

Class 1 Safety Is a Big Deal

The P3 is certified as a Class 1 laser device. This is a significant upgrade from the P2S's Class 4 rating. What this means in practice:

Class 1 means the machine is fully enclosed and interlocked. The laser cannot fire with the lid open. No special training, safety glasses, or dedicated laser safety officer is required. This makes the P3 suitable for shared workspaces, schools, makerspaces, and environments where non-experts will be nearby.

Class 4 (like the P2S) requires safety protocols, laser safety eyewear, controlled access, and in some states and institutions, a designated Laser Safety Officer.

If you plan to use this machine in a classroom, library makerspace, or any commercial environment where employees or the public are present, the Class 1 rating is not just convenient. It may be required.

The P3 also includes eight flame detectors, a temperature sensor, and a mount for a CO2 fire extinguisher that activates automatically. No other desktop CO2 laser offers this level of built-in fire suppression.

Where the xTool P3 Falls Short

It Is Expensive

Starting at $4,999 for the base unit, the P3 is a serious investment. Once you add common accessories, a realistic total looks more like $6,000 to $7,500:

Item Approximate Price
xTool P3 (base) $4,999
Mobile Work Stand $299-$399
AP2 Max Air Purifier $799-$999
Smart RA3 Rotary $299-$399
Conveyor Feeder $499-$699
IR Laser Module (for metals) $399
Realistic Total $6,000-$7,500

This puts the P3 well beyond hobby territory. You need to be running a business, or planning to, in order to justify this investment. If you are making custom signs, awards, furniture components, or running a production shop, the P3 pays for itself through speed and automation. If you are engraving the occasional cutting board as a gift, this machine is overkill.

It Is Massive and Heavy

At 230 lbs, the P3 is not something you casually move around your garage. It requires a dedicated workspace, ideally on the optional mobile work stand (which adds another $300-$400). You also need to account for the exhaust system (either venting outside or using the AP2 Max air purifier) and adequate electrical supply.

If your workspace is a spare bedroom or a small apartment, the P3 is probably not practical. Consider the xTool S1 or a diode laser like the xTool F1 Ultra instead.

You Are Locked into xTool's Software

The P3 uses xTool Creative Space exclusively. It does not support LightBurn, which is the industry-standard laser software preferred by many experienced users. xTool's software is polished and beginner-friendly, but it does not offer the same depth of control that LightBurn provides.

For most users, especially those coming from no laser experience, xTool Creative Space is more than adequate. But if you are a LightBurn power user migrating from an OMTech, Thunder Laser, or open-frame diode laser, this is a real limitation to be aware of. You will need to learn a new software workflow.

Engraving Speed Does Not Match the Marketing

xTool markets the P3 at 1,200 mm/s, and the machine can achieve that speed on straight cuts. But for detailed engraving work, you will not be running anywhere near 1,200 mm/s. Detailed engravings require lower speeds (typically 200-600 mm/s depending on material and detail level) to avoid scorching and achieve clean results.

Benchmark testing by independent reviewers has shown that while the P3 is faster than the P2S for cutting, the practical engraving speed difference is modest. If your primary use case is photo-quality engraving rather than cutting, the P3's speed advantage over the P2S may not be as dramatic as you expect.

Who Should Buy the xTool P3

The P3 is the right choice if you check two or more of these boxes:

You run (or plan to run) a production business. Custom signage, awards, furniture components, wholesale products, or high-volume personalization. The P3's automation, speed, and large work area directly increase your throughput and reduce labor time per piece.

You need to cut thick materials. If your projects regularly involve 1/2" to 3/4" wood, thick acrylic, or dense materials, the 80W laser handles these with ease. Lower-powered machines require multiple passes or cannot cut them at all.

You need Class 1 safety. Schools, makerspaces, commercial storefronts, event personalization businesses, or any environment where non-trained people will be nearby. The Class 1 rating and fire suppression system make the P3 uniquely suitable for these settings.

You value automation over manual control. If you want to place material, click print, and walk away, the P3's ACS system delivers that experience better than any other desktop laser.

You work with diverse materials daily. The combination of CO2 laser (wood, acrylic, leather, glass, fabric) plus the optional IR module (metals, plastics) means one machine handles almost everything. The Smart RA3 rotary with LiDAR mapping adds cylindrical objects like tumblers, bottles, and rings.

Who Should NOT Buy the xTool P3

Hobbyists and occasional crafters. If you laser engrave a few times per month, the P3 is overkill. The xTool S1 ($1,849 with current promotions) or the xTool F1 Ultra ($3,199+) are better fits at a fraction of the price.

Budget-conscious buyers. If $5,000+ is a stretch, consider the xTool P2S (55W, smaller work area, ~$3,500) or look at alternatives like the OMTech Polar 50W or Creality Falcon2 Pro for significantly less money.

People who need LightBurn. If your workflow depends on LightBurn and you are not willing to switch to xTool Creative Space, the P3 will frustrate you. Look at OMTech, Full Spectrum Laser, or Thunder Laser machines that support LightBurn natively.

Small workspace users. If you do not have a dedicated workshop or garage with adequate ventilation, the P3's size and exhaust requirements will be a problem.

Final Verdict

The xTool P3 is the best desktop CO2 laser cutter available for production-oriented users who value automation, safety, and power. Its "Place and Go" workflow is not just marketing speak; it genuinely saves 5-10 minutes per job compared to manual-focus machines, and that compounds into hours of saved time per week in a production environment.

At $4,999+, it is not for everyone. Hobbyists should look at the xTool S1 or a quality diode laser. Budget buyers should consider the OMTech Polar 50W. LightBurn users should look at machines from OMTech or FSL.

But if you are running a business, cutting thick materials, or need Class 1 safety for a shared workspace, the P3 is difficult to beat. It delivers industrial-grade performance in a desktop package with the best automation system in the category.
